Synopsis:
Protégé is a stimulating exploration of the complex relationships within the multilayered, international drug manufacturing and distribution syndicates of today. It is everything you want to know about drugs, but never knew.

The film tells of a well-intentioned narcotics agent, Nick (Daniel Wu) deep undercover in the heart of Hong Kong’s lucrative heroin trade. He is forced to deal with the hypocrisy and despair in a life of drugs and crime, as he plays protégé to one of the key players of the game, “Banker” (Andy Lau). In the eight years he has been infiltrating the heroin industry; Nick has amassed enough evidence to indict Banker, but has just received orders to remain undercover in an attempt to expose the identity of the man behind Banker in order to bring down the entire organization. However, as Nick becomes more embroiled with Banker’s craft and increasingly entrusted with his confidences, he finds himself corrupted by the easy money and his new found power. Unable to separate himself from his undercover persona, he immerses himself into his role as a drug trafficker.

“阿力”用了八年時間,從一名小拆家混到壟斷海洛英市場的“莊家”身旁,負責處理出貨及運輸工作。多年以來,他全心全意要搜集一條完整販毒線的全部資料，可是行事小心的莊家從沒透露過貨倉、製毒工場的位置；甚至其他同事的面貌，阿力都從未見過。幸而莊家有退休之意,想將生意交給阿力接管,漸漸向阿力道出經營的秘密。阿力越接近莊家的真相，越感到迷失，活在兩個極端世界中間，他與吸毒者“阿芬”投入了一段互相慰藉、各取所需的感情。但是每當他看見阿芬臂上的針孔時,心中感到更沉痛的震撼。莊家帶阿力到金三角,在軍閥、毒販和罌粟的圍繞下，對阿作出接棒前的最後試探。一場鬥智的過程,令阿力獲得莊家的絕對信任。莊家舉家移民,在離境時被探員拘捕。莊家竟自殺以截斷警方的偵查線索。阿力繼承了莊家位置,一邊當毒販、一邊繼續追蹤販毒線的源頭,他已經分不清自己的真正身份…
