Sex is not effortless, even for animals. It is selfish, aggressive, competitive and sometimes fatal.
Episode 1 : WIMPS AND WARRIORS - The series introduction will shatter the romantic notion that sex is a harmonious joint enterprise between males and females - it is wasteful, stressful, and often lethal! The story will focus on how males set out to win females. Many males are born warriors, designed to compete, entering pitch battles with each other, where size, weaponry and ferocity smash the competition, thereby giving the victorious ones access to fertile females.
Episode 2 : CHOOSY FEMALES - Males might be victorious, but the females have a very crucial role to play. Unlike the male, whose reproductive potential depends upon the number of mates he can satisfy, the number of eggs she can produce determines the female's potential. Therefore she is especially fussy about who fertilizes them. This fundamental difference between males and females is the very nub of why sex is a battle, and results in promiscuous males and coy females with a critical gaze.
Episode 3 : RACE FOR THE EGG - In the strife between the sexes, the fight for a mate is but the start. As life on Earth evolved, there was a shift from external fertilisation to various kinds of internal fertilisation. Spawning, spermatophores and the astonishingly diverse shapes of penises are but aspects of this veritable Kama Sutra of wild "sex". Copulation might be considered easy, but what about hedgehogs, porcupines, whales and tortoises!
Episode 4 : THE PARENTAL DILEMMA - The undercurrent of all sex is continual dissatisfaction: females believe there's a better mate just round the corner and males hate being tied to one female. Generating offspring is of prime importance, but caring for them takes away valuable time which could be spent in making more of them. So "Who rears the kids and for how long?" - that is the "parental dilemma". From this conflict between the sexes, an array of parental systems have evolved. In nature, each kind of "family arrangement" represents a compromise.
Episode 5 : FAMILY AFFAIRS - The relationship between males and females takes on interesting aspects in gregarious animals. Some - like many seabirds - gather seasonally in huge communities and breed for a short period. Others, due to the pressures of finding food or their need for protection, live in organised groups. For social animals which can breed all the year round, sexual rivlries can be a very disruptive force.
Episode 6 : THE RIDDLE OF SEX - The series conclusion focuses upon the implications of the deep rooted differences between males and females. The most dramatic behavior, the most bizarre and the beautiful - there are the fruit of the sexual process. Sexuality is a fundamental characteristic of life, and yet it is still poorly understood.
