Synopsis:
From late 1920’s to early 30’s, Yusheng (Ray Lui) has established himself as the overlord of Shanghai. He’s in politics, business, and, above all, the huge underworld. Yusheng decides to have a bank of his own. Later, he decides to quit opium smoking and starts going to school. He has developed a very strong sense of commitment to the country. In 1973, Yusheng returns to Shanghai, only to be reined in by the government. He is frustrated. Then China has fallen into Communist’s hands. A sad Yusheng finally realizes that he has to return to Hong Kong again…

陸月生（呂良偉 飾）是黑幫成員，與黃全榮（鄭則士 飾）、袁嘯軍販賣鴉片起家，更因參與工人起義與國民政府有著千絲萬縷的關係。陸月生為人疏爽豪氣，經常入不敷支，希望開銀行利用存款以便周轉，但銀行家陳冬甫以陸為流氓出身，發動抵制。陸非常生氣，進行大報復，燒陳倉庫，更令他的銀行擠提。陳唯有求饒。自此，所有商界也非常害怕陸，忌他三分。後來，陸力爭上游，讀書戒鴉片，希望改過自新。日本侵華，陸盡力捐助，並發動門生組織別動隊，與日軍作戰。陸登臺義演時，邂逅紅顏知己孟小東。日軍已攻陷上海，別動隊傷亡慘重，其後陸逃亡香港。抗戰勝利後，陸希望成為上海市長，衣錦還鄉。可惜，法租界取消後，陸再無利用價值，政府處處打擊陸威信。陸忍辱負重，努力競選議長，最後雖然當選，亦被迫放棄。

1949年，解放軍逼近上海，陸無奈又舉家移居香港……
